University of Oregon | Track and Field Poster

This poster is especially nostalgic for me (Steve), as it was the first project I was given the design lead on while working at my rookie design agency job right out of college.

The University of Oregon knew they wanted to feature their two star track athletes, Sarah Malone and Tommy Skipper, but other than that I was given no additional direction.

The title “Hayward’s Heroes” came to mind, since the home of UO Track and Field, Hayward Field, is so iconic (especially in Eugene). And with a title like that, it seemed natural to go with a throwback ’70s vibe for the design.

The UO loved it, and shortly after we received their final approval I began to see this poster plastered all over Eugene. It’s been almost 20 years since that experience, but even to this day I still get the same kick whenever I see my work out in the wild.
